For Therapists
I offer Supervision and Consultation for Therapists.
SUPERVISION:
As my web site illustrates, I have 30 years experience counseling clients with eating disorders. I am also an accredited and approved supervisor for the State of Washington. In this role, I provide the certified supervision necessary for those therapists seeking to obtain a valid Washington State license by fulfilling the required number of “supervised” client therapy hours. The issue of eating disorders is very complex. This is not a disorder that you can effectively treat without commitment to extensive education, learning and the essential experience. I have had many clients that had previously gone to other therapists, who assured them by saying, “Oh, yes, I have worked with eating disorders.” However, in order to be successful, the treatment of eating disorders cannot just be a sideline or a minor part of a practice. It needs to be the primary focus. Dealing with eating disorders is like working with an onion - there are many layers, many significant elements. For these reasons, I only offer supervision services to those therapists who choose to specialize in eating disorders. In learning to work with eating disorders, you will also develop the skills and knowledge needed to work with incest survivors, adult children of alcoholics, victims of child abuse, dysfunctional relationships, parenting problems, and more. An eating disorder, by its nature, is multifaceted and intricate requiring expertise in many areas.
CONSULTATION:
My consultation services are available to all therapists seeking to learn more about eating disorders. In this case, the purpose of the consultation can be to facilitate care of current clients or to provide additional information for those intending to specialize in this area.
CONSULTATION VS. SUPERVISION:
The difference between my consultation and supervision services is that the State requisites are not involved with respect to consultation. With supervision, the legal requirements are specific. For example, in the formal role of Supervisor, I am obligated to take detailed notes and complete State forms as a condition for the granting of a license. I only perform this direct supervision for therapists who need these mandated hours. However for those not in the licensing process, I am happy to be available for consultations and to be involved in educational opportunities for all therapists.
I have a Masters degree in counseling, psychology from North Texas State University. During my career, I have practiced in several settings. At the Swedish/Ballard Hospital in Seattle I worked as a therapist in the eating disorder unit. At Antioch University, I taught eating disorder classes to counseling students at the master’s level. I worked at a shelter for battered women and children. In Denver at a mental health center, I focused directly on the treatment of children. I also was employed in public schools as a therapist for a special education classroom. I have been on the front lines dealing with eating disorders for about 30 years in both private practice and corporate situations.
